Climate change coupled with global warming remains one of the challenges facing the world. Researchers have established that natural and human factors contribute significantly on this issue, but at different levels (Drake, 44). Human activities such as combustion of fuel fossils, deforestation, and emission of green house gases from industries remains some of the factor fuelling global warming, depletion of ozone layer and climate change. The media has aired and addressed the impacts associated with global warming and climate change and recommended the use of environmental friendly energies. Although the media remains vital in addressing impacts accruing from climate change, it has politicized and blown out of context the issue of global warming and climate change thus influencing public view (McCaffrey, 92). The paper explores reliability and credibility of the internet in addressing impacts accruing from global warming and climate change.
- Global Warming Hoax: Where only the Truth Heats up http://www.globalwarminghoax.com/news.php?extend.133
Rise of water levels in seas and oceans because of ice melting remains one of the negative impacts accruing from global warming and climate change. This phenomenon is common in Antarctica continent and other polar regions of the world. The steam media has informed the public that Antarctica ice keep on reducing in size because of ice melting (John & Herron, 1). However, this site contradicts this assertion because it states that Antarctica ice is expanding. This is a reliable site because it supports its argument using empirical data and statistics. John Herron and Joseph herron have developed this site and they have addressed this topic exhaustively. John and Joseph articulate that they developed this site for the “common good” living on the earth. Members of the society and well-wishers finance the website through donations and contributions. John Herron and Joseph herron have approached the issue of ice increase professionally as they have integrated scientific evidence to support their argument. Additionally, they have linked their analysis with data obtained from the National Snow and Ice data Centre at University of Colorado; which is a reliable source of information. Based on their analysis, they have proved that Antarctica ice is increasing because warm air currents carries more moisture and facilitate snow fall while cold currents lower snow fall because the air becomes drier.
The site predisposes that Antarctica ice is actually expanding and not decreasing as pronounced by the steam media. The site articulates that Antarctica sea ice is more than the one experienced during 1980 and has expanded by 14% under ice extent unit, and by 30% under sea ice concentration. John and Joseph support this fact by using statistical data from National Snow and Ice Data and comprehensive analysis on how wind current influencing snow fall in the region.
- Antarctica gaining ice? http://www.skepticalscience.com/
This site aims at answering the question on whether Antarctica region is losing or gaining ice. This website is reliable because it has elaborated on this concept exhaustively by using scientific statistics obtained from National Snow and Ice data center and Copenhagen Diagnosis techniques, which are reliable and credible sources. It has addressed this issue from broader perspective as it has distinguished between land ice and sea ice, which tend to confuse many people.
The main point addressed by John Cook is that Antarctica sea ice in increasing, but he does not attribute this trend with climate change and global warming. Instead, he attributes it the lowering ozone layer and refreshing of South Ocean because of increased glacier flow, precipitation, and snowfall, which reduce ice melting. Ozone layers have reduced in size thus leaving large water bodies open for cooling and freezing.
The first site had comprehensively addressed this issue, but the authors failed to include evidences that are more scientific. It is important for scientists to use their knowledge and skills in informing the public about contemporary challenges facing the world accurately.
