U.S. Keeps Eye on Iran Policy
The September 2, 2013 news article in the New York Times namely “Drawing a Line on Syria, U.S. Keeps Eye on Iran Policy” says that as the US government pushes for punitive actions against the Syrian government; majority of the proponent of military action against Syria are of the opinion that a message should be conveyed to Iran in order to succeed. Unless the US enforces the sanctions against the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian administration; Iran may smell the weakness in the actions and instead push on with its nuclear threats. This would be clashing with the efforts by the US government of exploiting dialogues with the current president of Iran; Hassan Rouhani in order to quell the long-time adversaries. Both administrations are determined to resolve the hostilities; however, the military air strike would be a severe blow if Iran is not in favor of it. Officials from the Iran administration have been heard saying that attacks on Syria would be considered as attacks on Iran itself, since Syria is an important ally. For a mutual antipathy, Iran and the US would have to find a mutual ground in Syria (Worth, 2013).
The use of chemicals against protestors in Syria has been a global issue because it is a threat to thousands of lives. The use of chemicals by the Syrian administration put at stake the interests of the UN. It is a violation of global norms which all nations abide by to safeguard human lives. Several nations fell that they are obliged to bring the use of chemical weapons to an end; however a mutual consent should be arrived at so as to cause a world war as some nations are against military action on the Syrian administration.
